How Telecommunications Billing Has Changed Over The Years

Telecommunications billing has remained fairly constant throughout the century in which telephone contact has been readily available. In fact, there have been hardly any changes in the fundamental telephone system for many decades. That was until the Internet came on the scene, providing the most dramatic shake up of the system both in terms of what is available, and the expense at which it can be obtained. Now, many of the services which are available don't even need any billing at all, as they are either free to use, or are charged out of a bank which you pay in advance.

Telephone calls have traditionally been paid for based on the distance over which the call is routed, and the amount of time a call lasts. This has been by far the most prolific pricing model over the last century, and it remains extensively in use today. It does have the advantage of being the fairest payment system, in that you are paying for exactly what you are able to use and no more. This cannot be said of many of the payment systems which have evolved today, especially those used for cell phones.

The telecommunication billing system which is now in use more frequently than any other is the monthly plan. The prices of these plans vary depending on what it being offered. At the basic level, you just get the rental of the line, and any calls are paid for in the old way. The companies are always trying to get you to upgrade to packages where some of the calls you make are included in the pricing. Whether or not this will be good for you depends entirely on your usage pattern and when the calls are made. Don't assume that you will automatically save money just because you are paying a flat fee.

The Internet is changing the game completely, and the traditional telecommunication billing systems are being challenged in the most dramatic way. Paying for telephone calls based on duration is extremely rare on the Internet, because the whole system runs on a permanently available broadband connection which is invariably charged at a monthly rate. Dial up connections are not good enough to allow this technology to work, and that will continue to be a problem until the whole world has access to broadband Internet.

If you have groups of people you make telephone calls to regularly, you can avoid telecommunications billing altogether. If both you and the recipient of your call have access to broadband Internet and the right computer equipment, you can make and receive telephone calls using software. These calls are completely free, other than the expense of the electricity to run the system. This is valuable for anyone, but for people who have family abroad it is a godsend. It is now far cheaper and easier to stay in touch without telecommunications billing.
