How Telecommunications Have Evolved Over Time

Telecommunications has become one of the largest and most important industries on the planet, with an annual turnover worldwide of nearly four trillion dollars. It is an industry on which virtually every other business in existence has come to rely, to some degree at least. In recent decades, technology has advanced to the level where communications options are much expanded. People have far more choice than ever before in the way they get in touch with other people, and there are even many different ways to use Internet technology.

Some form of communication system has been necessary throughout recorded history, but the means have been limited by the speed at which physical items could be transferred over distance. Stone tablets needed to be physically carried from one location to another. Even in the case of smoke signals, where nothing is physically transported, there were limits on the distance at which they could be seen by the recipient. This was the case until only a century ago, when the invention of the telephone made it possible to communicate with people on the other side of the world as if they were in the same room.

The telephone had a dramatic effect on business throughout the twentieth century. All service businesses were able to operate far more effectively and use their time more efficiently. Even before the advent of the Internet, telecommunications were fueling the economy by allowing far more transactions to take place. The face of commerce was also changed. It was easier for people serving small sectors of the market to be able to sell nation wide, and it became possible to take credit card orders over the telephone.

The Internet has, of course, taken all of this to a completely new level. Now it is not only possible to send voice communications over huge distances, it is possible to transmit every other type of media as well. Only physical items now need to be actually transported from one place to another, with the inevitable time delay. Many people who are used to the traditional forms of communication simply don't realize how big the Internet has become, nor how rapidly it is continuing to grow.

Internet communication has continued to evolve rapidly as the electronic technology which powers it has become increasingly powerful. It was always possible for text messages to be transmitted using bulletin boards, and it didn't take long for the Internet to offer telephone style voice communications. Now, this is being taken to another level, as technology becomes advanced enough to allow real time video transmission. With the right equipment, you can now project a picture of someone you are talking to onto a wall, and talk to them for free as if you were in the same room. There are endless possibilities for keeping in touch in the new world of telecommunications.
